Weekly Events

Tuesday brunch

On Tuesday, we gather for Tuesday Brunch, which includes a free meal and an educational component (see below).

Brunch starts at 11:30 am at UC Davis and 12:00 pm at Sac State. It’s buffet style. Come by anytime between 11:30-1:30 pm and grab a plate of delicious homemade foods and fresh fruit.

ShaBbat

During the academic year we celebrate a weekly Shabbat where we explore different educational themes during dinner. The exceptions are school breaks and most 3-day weekends.

We offer student-led Kabbalat Shabbat services and a delicious dinner prepared in our kosher kitchen by Chef Karyn and student volunteers.

All food is kosher and vegetarian options are available.

Friday-Evening Schedule

6:00 pm - Kabbalat Shabbat Services
7:00 pm - Dinner & Program

Learning Opportunities

Hillel incorporates learning opportunities into our events throughout the year. Below are some examples.

We offer learning fellowships, such as the Jewish Learning Fellowship (JLF) and the Israel Learning Fellowship (ILF) where we heard from guest speakers from the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies.

Hebrew Cafe, a student-led Hebrew class, is offered throughout the year.

Tuesday Brunch often includes a learning or tzedek component, such as assembling care packages for Afghan refugees in 2021.

Social Events

We have many social events that often coincide with Jewish or Israeli holidays.

-Hanukkah-Candle Making

-Purim Party

-Israeli Spa Night

-Israel Week (during Yom HaZikaron and Yom Ha’atzmanut)

Uber and gas reimbursements

Are you resident outside of Davis? Transportation should not be an obstacle to getting involved!

-You can get reimbursed for gas mileage and Uber/Lyft rides.

-Gas mileage is reimbursed at a rate of 65 cents per mile.

-Send a screenshot of your receipt if you’re taking Uber/Lyft.

-Still have questions? Contact Diane Weber at the Jewish Federation of Sacramento.

Trips

Birthright Israel Trips

Hillel at Davis and Sacramento offers a free 10-day trip to Israel with Birthright Israel.

Perspectives Trip

We offer another free trip for both Jewish and non-Jewish students to Israel and Palestine (the West Bank) that gives students the opportunity to learn about the Israeli-Arab Conflict firsthand.

Alternative Spring Break (ASB) Trip

Going on an alternative spring break (ASB) is a unique and meaningful way to spend spring break. We currently have no ASB trips planned, but stay tuned for possible trips in the future.

Hillel has organized ASB trips in the past to New Orleans and Miami. View photos below.
